There was a show of natural gift of prodigies of the world in late April in Beijing, China at the invitation of the Chinese central TV broadcasting and video presentation production unit. It brought together children aged between three and fifteen from different countries.
Kim Jin Ok from Kumsong Secondary School No.1 in the DPRK, performed there folk dances "Water jar dance" and "Janggo dance". The 10-year-old girl danced so amazingly that the host set the duration of her performance to 30 minutes instead of customary 10 minutes and asked her to dance to the tune of Chinese song "Nanniwan" played by the famous Chinese father and son hourglass drummers.
After seeing her dance the spectators and TV viewers lavished praise on her, saying that her elegant and beautiful dance is the best and she deserves to be registered on the Guinness World Records. Many journalists asked her; "How many times can you spin with a water jar on the head?" and "Where did you learn how to dance and what's your greatest wish?"
She said: "I'm learning dance in the Pyongyang Students and Children's Palace. My greatest wish is to dance in the presence of leader Kim Jong Il."
She started learning dance when she was 6. According to her mother Choe Yong Hui, she was surprised to hear that her daughter was going to take up dance instead of playing kayagum, a Korean stringed instrument, in her kindergarten days. Her parents were hesitant, unsure of her success in dancing which requires harder work. Teachers of the children's palace found out and cultivated the bud of talent in her. Never had we dreamed that a dance prodigy would be produced from our family, Choe said proudly. It was obvious that Jin Ok had a gift for dance. She was a quick learner of Korean dance movements and began to distinguish herself in her age group in a year.
She came first twice in the national schoolchildren's vocal, instrumental and dance solo contest and visited China for a performance tour as a member of the Pyongyang Schoolchildren's Art Troupe in 2009 which marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the DPRK and China. She staged solo dance "Water jar of grudge" in the 2009 schoolchildren's lunar new year performance and "Janggo dance" in the lunar new year performance this year. She won a high accolade for performing movements of high degrees of difficulty gracefully in line with the ideological content of the dance piece.
She has a feeling for music and wonderfully represents dance pieces with exceptionally swift footwork.
